HCI Announces Third Certification: essentiALZ® Plus Dementia-Related Behavior

MINNEAPOLIS, MN- February 5th, 2013. HealthCare Interactive® (HCI) is pleased to announce the release of our new version of CARES® Dementia-Related Behavior™ including Alzheimer’s Association® essentiALZ® Plus Dementia-Related Behavior Certification. Individuals who take the training will now have the opportunity to take the essentiALZ Plus certification exam. CARES Dementia-Related Behavior is suitable for a variety of people who assist in caregiving for an individual with dementia. The strategies used within the program center around the CARES Approach, which is a person-centered care approach that is easy to learn and helpful in possibly reducing dementia-related behavior. “It’s an expanded program that digs deeper into CARES and focuses on the correct approaches when caring for behavior that is dementia related,” says HCI’s National Sales Manager, Theresa Williams. “We like to recommend you take this after CARES® Dementia Basics™, which is our prerequisite program.”

About CARES Dementia-Related Behavior

CARES Dementia-Related Behavior is a 4-module (4-hour) program that focuses on the behavior of people with dementia that is hard to understand and difficult to respond to. Sometimes referred to as “challenging behavior” or “inappropriate behavior,” we use the term “dementia-related behavior” as a person-centered, respectful term that does not put blame on the person with dementia.

You’ll learn thoughtful and effective ways to care for people with dementia when they are confused, frustrated, scared, or angry. You’ll learn what to do when a person with dementia yells, curses, hits, kicks, or bites. And, you’ll learn when and how to respond to sexual behavior. Knowing these new ways of caring can make the behavior less severe. This can make caregiving less stressful for you and make life better for the person with dementia.

The 4 modules of Dementia-Related Behavior Include:

1. Introduction to Dementia-Related Behavior
2. Using the CARES® Approach with Dementia-Related Behavior
3. Breaking down the CARES® Approach for Dementia-Related Behavior
4. Key Responses to Dementia-Related Behavior

There is also a “Values” section that helps users understand how values and beliefs can impact care when dementia-related behavior is occurring.
